Our Frequently Asked Questions

We know transporting your pet can raise many questions. Here are some answers to some of the common questions.

How long does the journey take?

Spain to the UK is 48hrs by road and ferry.

Do you have a DEFRA license?

Yes. However, it’s important to understand that a DEFRA-issued transporter authorisation alone only permits a transporter to operate within the United Kingdom.

For pet transportation within the European Union, transporters must also hold the appropriate EU authorisations and comply with EU animal transport regulations. In addition, transporters should possess:

  • A valid Animal Transporter Authorisation
  • An Animal Welfare Competency Certificate
  • A Vehicle Inspection Certificate approved for animal transportation
  • All required UK and EU compliance documentation

At ProPaws, we are fully compliant with both UK and EU legislation governing the transportation of animals. We are also EORI registered, enabling us to manage cross-border movements efficiently and legally.

Is the van climate controlled?

Our van has been specially adapted to ensure maximum comfort and safety for pets during transport. The bulkhead behind the driver’s cab has been removed, allowing pets to share the same temperature, lighting, and fresh airflow as the crew. Fresh air is continuously supplied to the cargo area, while air conditioning is used during the hottest summer periods. In addition, motorised rooftop ventilators provide 24-hour air circulation, even when the vehicle is stationary, helping maintain a comfortable environment at all times.

My dog is nervous, anxious, doesn't like other dogs, or is wary of strangers. Can you help?

Absolutely. We ask owners to be present when we collect their pet so introductions can be made in a calm, reassuring way. Pets are welcome to travel with familiar comfort items such as a blanket, bed, or an item of their owner’s clothing.

Our van has been specially adapted with the bulkhead removed, allowing pets to remain in constant contact with the drivers throughout the journey. They share the same lighting, temperature, and atmosphere as the crew, helping them feel included and relaxed rather than isolated.

Cats travel separately from dogs, and both drivers are actively involved in animal rescue work in Spain, with extensive experience handling nervous, anxious, and traumatised animals.

Can I send personal items with my pet?

Yes, each pet may travel with one small soft bag (approximately “bag for life” size). The bag must be sealed and clearly labelled with your pet’s name.

Please note that space is limited, and oversized beds cannot be accommodated. Larger items restrict air circulation around the travel crates or obstruct access to pets in the event of an emergency. Both situations could also cause issues during animal welfare inspections at ports and border crossings.

Harnesses, leads, and any toys should be packed inside the labelled bag. Toys are not permitted in travel crates as they may present a choking hazard.

We provide appropriate bedding, food and water bowls, and carry spare supplies for all pets on board. Due to limited space, large beds and bulky luggage cannot be accepted.

Border Control and Customs authorities have the right to search, inspect, and remove any items they deem non-essential.
